Where is the Evidence that Hyperthermia Works?

If you want irrefutable proof that hyperthermia works, visit the US National Library of Medicine's website PubMed.gov, a division of the National Institute of Health (NIH).  PubMed is a repository of over 26 million citations for biomedical literature.  Using the search bar, type in “hyperthermia cancer treatment” and you will find over 25,000 results.

Too many results than most of us would find useful, so we narrowed down the list.  The link below contains completed randomized trials using hyperthermia as an adjunct to radiation therapy and chemotherapy over the last 30 years.  The studies reveal a higher tumor response when hyperthermia is added over chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy alone.  Several of the studies use Pyrexar Medical equipment or lab built equipment using the same or similar radio frequency energy delivery system.

Last Week at ASCO 2016

Last week we exhibited at the ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncologist) Annual meeting held in Chicago.  With an estimated crowd of thirty three thousand, the primary message seemed to be dominated by immunotherapy.  Everyone is looking for that trigger that will activate the immune system so the body will kill its own cancer.

So why was Pyrexar Medical there? Traditionally as an adjunct to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, Hyperthermia has been very effective in shrinking tumors, killing cancer cells, and improving drug delivery.

There is preclinical evidence that heating a cancer tumor initiates a similar immuno-activation response potentially serving as an adjunct to the immunotherapy drugs in development.  The diagram below demonstrates the immunomodulation induced by hyperthermia.

Preclinical evidence suggests that heating the cancer cells causes cell stress and the release of HSP (heat shock proteins).  One of the roles of HSP it to assist the delivery and integration of Antigens, molecules which induce immune response, to the lymphatic system.  With the information provided by the cancer specific Antigen, the Lymphatic system then produces cancer specific Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes ( aka T-Cells) with customized receptors that are capable of identifying, targeting and killing the cancer.  Once the T-cells are programmed, heating has an additional benefit of increasing blood flow, speeding up the delivery of the T-cells to the cancer site.

Immunomodulation would explain the long term survival rates as reported in a Phase III Sarcoma study “Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy alone or with regional hyperthermia for localised high-risk soft-tissue sarcoma: a randomised phase 3 multicenter study” by well-known physician Dr. Rolf Issels.  In this dual armed study, half of the Sarcoma patients received chemotherapy (CT) and the other half received chemotherapy + hyperthermia (CT+HT). Sarcoma patients receiving CT+HT not only had significantly increased tumor response, but remained cancer free more than two times longer than those who received chemotherapy alone.  

Heating boosts radiotherapy; heating boosts chemotherapy; it stands to reason, with all we know, that heating will boost Immunotherapy. Certainly a significant benefit for immunotherapy drug makers. ABC News Report on Hyperthermia - Part 1

Four weeks ago, the ABC News department at Salt Lake City's Good4Utah Channel 4 followed us to a Hyperthermia Oncology Conference in New Orleans. The news crew was looking to answer one question, "Why was hyperthermia cancer treatment therapy was so underutilized in the state?" Especially in a state where hyperthermia equipment has been manufacturered for the last 34 years.  Instead of flying around the world, they decided to visit the one place where experts in the field would be gathering, the ICHO.

The ICHO (International Conference for Hyperthermia Oncology) is a quadrennial meeting of the ASHO (Asian Society of Hyperthermic Oncology) the ESHO (European Society of Hyperthermic Oncology) and the STM (Society of Thermal Medicine - USA).  It is a place where experts in the field gather to share studies and challenge one another.  United by one goal, defeat cancer.

Pyrexar presents Lifetime Achievement Awards at ICHO

pyrexar award 2016Dr. Gerhard Sennewald, Paul TurnerThe International Congress of Hyperthermic Oncology (ICHO) is a quadrennial event bringing together the annual gatherings of the Society of Thermal Medicine (STM), European Society of Hyperthermic Oncology (ESHO) and the Asian Society of Hyperthermic Oncology (ASHO) to a common venue.  Clinicians and Researchers from around the world gather to share their findings on the effect of hyperthermia (heat) as a weapon in the fight against cancer.

At this event, Pyrexar was honored to present their Lifetime Achievement Award to individuals whose contributions to the field have directly affected the survival of those with life threatening cancer. 

The first recipient of the Pyrexar LTA award is Paul Turner, considered the father of phased array radio frequency hyperthermia.  Holder of multiple patents in the arena of thermal therapy, Paul has been working in the field for almost 40 years and his contributions to cancer therapies are realized in the entire Pyrexar Medical product line.

The second recipient, Gerhard Sennewald, PhD, is the president of Sennewald Medizintechnik GmbH in Munich, Germany.  A long time board member of the former BSD Medical and current Pyrexar Medical.  His relationships with the European cancer treatment community and his team of engineers, are instrumental in the development of Image Guided Thermal Therapy. IGTT uses Magnetic Resonance Imaging to determine tumor core temperature to guide the application of hyperthermia in the treatment of cancer.

Pyrexar Celebrates its First Year

As Pyrexar Medical celebrates it first anniversary, I reflect on the amazing achievements of the past year.  Our products are being represented in over 50 countries in the world, with many more in line for distribution. Hyperthermia is on the precipice of a cancer fighting revolution.

I want to acknowledge those who have pioneered ahead of us, testing, focusing and perfecting the treatment systems into what we have today.  To those in research for discovering the biology of the immune system that reveals why heating cancer tumors is so successful. To the patient advocates that challenge our medical system in the U.S. by demanding hyperthermia. And to the doctors, all over the world, that reach out for new, better and more effective ways to treat cancer.

And most importantly, I want to thank the Pyrexar Team for sharing this same vision. I recall a Confucius quote “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” We all realize that every system that ships out of this facility is changing the life of a patient and a family.  I am proud to know we have built a company where we can make a difference.

The world is beginning to embracing the technology of heat and we will continue to prove... Thermal Therapy Works.  Immunology is our next frontier.

 

CE•lebration at Pyrexar

CE Celebration

The Pyrexar team is celebrating their new ISO 13485 Certification and CE re-certification today. ISO 13485 represents the requirements for a comprehensive quality management system for the design and manufacture of medical devices.  The ISO standard is also a required compliance to do business in the European Union. The CE mark,  a mandatory conformity marking for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA) since 1985, allows Pyrexar to ship medical devices to any of the 27 Member States of the EU.  Much like the FDA clearance in the U.S., the CE mark is well respected and plays a key role in acceptance with regulatory agencies of other nations.

New Speakers Added to Pyrexar Day Schedule

We are proud to announce two new additions to the ICHO/Pyrexar Day event calendar.

Curt HeeseDr. Curt Heese, board-certified radiation oncologist at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Philadelphia. Dr. Heese will be sharing his experiences using Pyrexar Hyperthermia systems as an adjunct therapy to treat pancreatic cancer.

 

 

Niloy DattaDr. Niloy Datta, oncologist and prolific researcher in the field of hyperthermia at Kantonspital Aarau AG, Aarau, Switzerland.  Dr. Niloy Data will be sharing early results from a multi-institutional phaseI/II clincal study "Hyperthermia and Proton Therapy in Unresectable Soft Tissue Sarcoma (HYPROSAR).

Pyrexar preparing to bring Hyperthermia Cancer Therapy to Cuba

Cancer deaths are high (138 per 100,000) in Cuba, according to World Life Expectancy.com, an organization that tracks death causality throughout the world.  Cuba cancer stats rank 31 in the world, slightly lower than the UK, and several points higher than the USA.   According to a study in 2001-2003 by the National Cancer Registry, Lung, Prostate, Throat and Colon had high incidence in men, while Breast, Cervix, Lung and Colon cancers were the most prevalent in women.

Today’s Big Deal is a Big Deal

new building introJust under a year ago, Pyrexar purchased the hyperthermia device group from Perseon Medical (formerly BSD Medical).  As part of the original purchase agreement, Perseon acquired 19.9% of our company along with royalties on future sales of the BSD-2000, our flagship product.  Royalties alone were estimated at $4 million over the next three years.

Today, we purchased that ownership back! 

Pyrexar is whole again and continuing to grow and move forward.  Every single department in the company has made incredible strides in efficiency, productivity and expansion.  The details may not be an interesting read, but they go along way to make Pyrexar a very successful business case study.

Here are some highlights!

New Distribution - Added nine new international distribution companies to our channel with several more in negotiation bringing our sales coverage to 31 countries

Revamped Manufacturing Workflow - We increased the speed of our manufacturing process by 600%.

Regulatory Process - Added TFDA (Taiwan FDA), KFDA (Korean FDA), TUV Rheinland and RoHs compliance to our process.

Engineering Updates - Manufacturing processes are being re-engineered to be more efficient and cost effective. Plus, we are well into a product road-map of new and exciting thermal therapy products

These improvements, along with a laundry list of incremental achievements, makes the company more organized, cost efficient, proactive and flexible.
